National Day of Prayer 2022: Prayers and Addiction Recovery

At Faith in Recovery, we treat people with drug and alcohol use disorders from a faith-based perspective. In addition to Scripture, prayer is also a common resource utilized at our Christian drug rehabilitation facility to help clients overcome addiction and the challenges that it comes with. With this in mind, National Day of Prayer 2022 is right around the corner, and we’re sharing prayers and ways you or a loved one can participate this year.

What and When Is the National Day of Prayer 2022?

National Day of Prayer is on May 5th, 2022. This day was founded in 1952 by the United States Congress and President Harry S. Truman. The holiday was signed into law by President Truman, and every president since has also signed a proclamation that encourages prayer and celebration of this day. This national holiday has always been celebrated on the first Thursday of every May since 1952.

National Day of Prayer promotes the use of prayer and the reading of Scripture in daily life. It encourages the use of morals from Biblical stories and lessons in difficult situations. Another way to say this is by relying on God’s guidance to make daily decisions.

While religion was often weaponized throughout history, National Day of Prayer encourages meditation and prayer with the goal of spiritual healing for all. From the impact of COVID-19 to the rise in mental illness and addiction, resources that encourage mental and spiritual healing are crucial now more than ever. Additionally, while National Prayer Day has been mobilized by the Christian community, this day can be celebrated by all cultures, beliefs, and religions.

Benefits of Prayer for Addiction Recovery

As a Christian addiction recovery center, we believe in the power of prayer and other faith-based tools for healing from drug and alcohol abuse. We encourage our clients to turn to God with problems like stress, pain, loneliness, and addiction to achieve long-lasting physical and emotional well-being. If you’re unconvinced, below are some benefits of prayer for addiction recovery that might encourage you to try it for yourself.

  • It promotes humility: Understanding that you can’t control or handle everything on your own can be a huge weight lifted off your shoulders.
  • It offers hope: People in recovery from addiction have plenty of days when they feel they don’t have the strength or will to keep going. On these days, prayer provides a much-needed sense of hope and support.
  • Supports mental health: Substance abuse is often linked to mental illness, so people in recovery will often receive treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy to address the mental and emotional sources of their addictions. Prayer can reduce stress, anger, and anxiety, aiding the recovery process.
  • It encourages self-reflection: Prayer allows you to take a step away from challenges like triggers, drug cravings, and stress to reflect on how you feel. It helps people recognize their emotional responses to distractions and develop emotional intelligence.
  • It helps create a routine: Many people in addiction recovery benefit from having a daily routine. Especially in early recovery, having a routine set in place prevents distractions and big gaps of time throughout the day when boredom can strike. Whether you pray when you first wake up or when you go to bed, daily praying can help you stick with a healthy routine.

Prayers for National Day of Prayer

In the Bible, God calls people of all nations to lift up our hearts before Him and love and lift up each other. With prayer, not only can we find personal healing, we can find the encouragement to love others, as well. With this in mind, here are some prayers for National Day of Prayer 2022 that address both personal and nationwide needs.

Prayer for Wisdom

Father God, I pray for your wisdom and discernment as I navigate the struggles of daily life. Give me the patience and compassion to care for myself and others as You have called me to do. On days when I feel tempted to return to my old ways, remind me of how far I’ve come. In Jesus' name, amen.

Prayer for Those Who Are Ill

Jesus, you have said that by your stripes, we are healed, and I thank You for the victory You won for us on the cross. You died and rose again not only to free us from sin but to offer us healing from the struggles of addiction and illness. I pray for those who are impacted by addiction, disease, and heartache Your peace and strength. I pray for physical and mental well-being for myself and others who share my struggles. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Prayer for First Responders

Father God, I thank You for the First Responders of this nation and their efforts in keeping us safe. May You grant all of our First Responders the wisdom, integrity, and strength to protect and serve their communities. Please grant them Your wisdom and discernment to know how to respond to challenging situations. Amen.

Prayer for People in the Medical Field

God, I pray for those who work in the medical field to keep our nation healthy. May You restore their strength and peace daily as they navigate the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of caring for others. May they turn to You as their source of hope and strength. I pray blessings upon these caregivers as well as for their health. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer for Our Partners

Father God, I pray that You are with my partner every day. May they perform well at work and get home safely daily. I pray for their physical and mental health. Thank You for my partner Father and may You grant them love and guidance every day. Amen.

Prayer for Our Children

Father God, I pray for the health, safety, and well-being of my children. Give me the strength, patience, and selflessness to love and honor my children every day.
