Benzo Detox at Faith in Recovery
Benzo Detox at Faith in Recovery
Benzodiazepines, or benzos, belong to a class of drugs called central nervous system depressants. Benzos are most often prescribed to treat anxiety disorders, panic attacks, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, and seizures. Benzodiazepines work by enhancing the effect of a neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Neurotransmitters are chemicals that send messages between brain cells, and these messages can produce stimulating or calming effects. Like other depressants, benzos are addictive and many individuals who misuse their prescription benzos or take them without a prescription often develop a physical dependence on them. Our Christian rehab center offers a benzo detox in Florida that serves as the first step in recovery from benzo addiction.
Benzo Withdrawal Symptoms
Withdrawal symptoms are a common aspect of benzo detox, which is also why this form of treatment is called benzo withdrawal treatment. Drug withdrawals are physical and behavioral symptoms that an addict may experience when they’re being weaned off of a drug or have completely stopped using it. While experiencing withdrawal symptoms is normal when detoxing off benzos, an at-home detox shouldn’t be attempted. Depending on how long the person has been using drugs and their health, they may experience symptoms severe enough to threaten their health and safety. Some common benzo withdrawals include:
- Anxiety
- Restlessness
- Irritability
- Muscle Aches
- Insomnia
- Agitation
- Poor Concentration
These symptoms are the body’s reaction to a reduced dose or lack of benzos. The more severe a person’s benzo addiction is, the more severe their withdrawal symptoms will be. Typically, withdrawal symptoms can begin within a few hours after the person’s last use and last anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks. Fortunately, we offer a medically monitored detox for benzodiazepines that targets these symptoms.
