How to Strengthen your Relationship with God in Recovery

As a Christian drug rehab, we understand the importance of maintaining your faith in God and your relationship with Him in recovery.

As with any relationship, our feelings often fluctuate, and we often become distracted by other things. Recovering from addiction is an especially challenging journey that involves a lot of change and discipline. It can be difficult to stay on track when you lose your center and your way in the Lord. We’re sharing some tips on how to strengthen your relationship with God in recovery that can help you find your way again.

3 Ways to Strengthen Your Relationship With God in Recovery

Once you have completed drug or alcohol treatment and have transitioned back into everyday life, feelings of loneliness, stress, and weakness can reemerge now and then. The good news is that God never abandons us, and we’re never truly separated from Him, no matter how alone we may feel. When utilizing scripture for sobriety, you learn new things about God and your relationship with Him. Below are some ways to revive your relationship with God as well as your faith.

Pray

Communication is key to any healthy relationship. If you never spoke to your friends, family, or spouse, how do you think that would make them feel? Well, God also appreciates our communication and misses us when we don’t talk to Him. But how do you talk to God? Through prayer. Prayer is our way of communicating our joy, hurt, confusion, and anything else we may be thinking or feeling to God. Jesus paved the way for this line of communication with the Father. Although we can’t audibly hear Him, God answers our prayers by setting things in motion in our lives or by keeping them still. When we neglect prayer, we often feel disconnected or distanced from God. The best way to get to know Him again is simply by talking to Him.

Read Scripture

What better way to get to know God and His character than by reading His word? The Bible is a history book that contains the memories, events, and miracles performed by God. In scripture, He often works through people to perform, heal and spread the gospel. There are Bible verses that offer advice for every situation. As a person in addiction recovery, you can find healing, support, guidance, hope, and love in the Bible if you just open it and take a peek for yourself.

Obey Him

While the Bible may seem like a big handbook to some, it contains events in which people learned valuable lessons. You often read of those who disobeyed God in scripture and suffered the repercussions. Because God is not spiteful nor cruel, the downfalls of people mentioned in the Bible all resulted from sin. Sin means to miss the mark, and we miss the mark when we do not obey God. Reading scripture is not just about reading to check off our to-do list. It’s about applying what we learn. He left us His word for a reason, and that’s to guide us to live life in a way that pleases Him and blesses us. God works through us, and we can’t receive God’s blessings if we don’t allow Him to work in our lives.

In addition to applying the advice above, below are some Bible verses for rebuilding your relationship with God.

Romans 8:37-39

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.

The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— whom shall I be afraid?

Isaiah 41:10
